Frequently Asked Questions About SIGG Water Bottle Liners

1) What is Bisphenol A (BPA) and how is it generally used?
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical building block that is used primarily to make polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Cured epoxy resins are inert materials and have been used as protective liners in metal containers for more than 40 years to maintain the quality of foods and beverages. They have achieved wide acceptance for use as protective coatings because of their combination of toughness, adhesion, formability and chemical resistance.
2) Did SIGG use BPA in its bottles?
Yes. Prior to August 2008, SIGG utilized a water-based epoxy liner that contained a trace amount of BPA. These bottles were thoroughly and regularly tested in the U.S. and Switzerland and all tests revealed absolutely no migration or leaching of BPA or any other substance from the former protective liner.
3) Are you still using BPA in your bottles?
No. All SIGG bottles made since August 2008 contain our BPA-free EcoCare liner, including all of the bottles for sale today on this website. SIGG led the industry and launched the first BPA-free liner for use in aluminum reusable water bottles.
4) Are older SIGG bottles that contain BPA safe?
Yes. U.S. and worldwide regulatory bodies continue to deem the component safe and independent research has shown that these bottles do not leach. We stand behind the quality and safety of all our SIGG bottles including those with our former liner.
5) Which SIGG products are BPA free?
All SIGG bottles manufactured since August 2008 contain our BPA-free EcoCare liner. Consumers can determine if they have a BPA-free EcoCare liner with a quick visual inspection. The EcoCare liner has a dull, pale yellow appearance while the former liner has a shiny copper bronze appearance. (see image below)

6) How can we be sure the new SIGG bottle liner is safe?
The new SIGG EcoCare liner is a powder-based, co-polyester that has been thoroughly tested and certified to be 100% free of BPA, phthalates, BADGE, BFDGE and NOGE.
7) What measures does SIGG maintain to regulate quality and safety?
The fact that SIGG bottles are manufactured in our own factory under our direct control allows us to closely monitor quality and safety. On an ongoing basis, we conduct rigorous independent laboratory tests in Switzerland and the U.S. to ensure our products are safe. These tests have been public information on the SIGG website for several years.
8) Where are SIGG products manufactured?
All SIGG brand products are manufactured in our company-owned factory in Frauenfeld, Switzerland.
9) Why did you wait so long to remove BPA from your liner?
BPA has been the industry-standard for protective coatings and is still approved by food and health regulators around the world. That said, we decided in 2006, well before the negative publicity surrounding BPA, to develop a next generation liner that was BPA free and more environmentally-friendly.

After two years of rigorous testing and development and a significant investment in new manufacturing equipment, we began producing bottles with our new EcoCare liner in August 2008.

At that time, we were the first aluminum reusable water bottle company in the world to phase out BPA from our entire product line.
